The iPhone SE lineup has been a popular choice for Apple enthusiasts who want a high-quality device at an affordable price. However, the future of the iPhone SE 4 has been a topic of debate for several months now, and the latest news from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has only added to the confusion.
In December 2022, Kuo reported that Apple had put the development of the iPhone SE 4 on hold as it decided whether to delay or cancel the device altogether. This news came as a disappointment to many who were eagerly awaiting the launch of the latest iPhone SE model.
But in February 2023, Kuo reported that development had resumed and that the iPhone SE 4 would be a “minor modification of the 6.1-inch iPhone 14” that used Apple’s in-house 5G modem. This news was met with excitement and anticipation from Apple fans who were eagerly waiting for the latest iPhone SE model.
However, in a recent post on Twitter, Kuo backtracked on his previous claims, saying that what he initially interpreted as the iPhone SE 4 is actually an “engineering prototype for Apple in-house 5G baseband chip technology and mass production validation.” As such, there are “no plans for mass production and sales”.
This latest news has thrown the future of the iPhone SE 4 into doubt once again, leaving many wondering if Apple will resume development or cancel the device altogether.
Kuo has also revealed that Apple is continuing its work on building its own 5G modem, which would allow it to ditch Qualcomm as a supplier. However, mass production of this 5G modem “hinges on the test results of this engineering prototype”. If development progresses as planned, mass production could begin in 2025, but if “testing falls below expectations, the schedule may be pushed back to 2026 or later”.
