Apple, the tech giant known for its innovative products, recently unveiled its highly anticipated Vision Pro platform at WWDC this month. With a scheduled release date of “early 2024,” Apple enthusiasts eagerly await the arrival of this cutting-edge technology. In a new report by renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, further details have emerged regarding Apple’s plans to enhance the integration between the iPhone and the Vision Pro ecosystem, starting with the upcoming iPhone 15, slated for release later this year.
According to Kuo’s recent Twitter post, Apple is set to “aggressively upgrade hardware specifications” of the iPhone as part of its strategic move to establish a competitive ecosystem around Vision Pro. Kuo emphasizes that the ecosystem is a crucial element for the success of Vision Pro, highlighting the integration with other Apple hardware products, with a particular focus on Wi-Fi and UWB (Ultra Wideband) specifications.
The initial step in this process involves the enhancement of the Ultra Wideband chip within the iPhone 15. Kuo suggests that the iPhone 15 will likely incorporate a new iteration of the Ultra Wideband chip, currently known as the U1 chip, to improve efficiency and reliability.
Kuo elaborates, stating, “The iPhone 15 will likely see a specification upgrade of UWB, with the production process moving from 16nm to a more advanced 7nm. This transition will enable improved performance or reduced power consumption for nearby interactions.”
The U1 chip made its debut in the iPhone 11 and has since been integrated into subsequent iPhone models. Furthermore, it is found in Apple’s AirTag item tracker, the Apple Watch Series 6 and newer models, the HomePod mini, the second-generation full-size HomePod, and the latest-generation AirPods Pro charging case.
The U1 chip serves multiple purposes, including Find My features, Handoff, Precision Finding, AirDrop, and more. Kuo asserts that an upgraded version of the U1 chip will not only enhance the performance of these features but will also play a pivotal role in the integration between Vision Pro and Apple’s other products.
Looking ahead to future developments, Kuo predicts that the iPhone 16 will be the first Apple device to support Wi-Fi 7 technology. “iPhone 16 will likely upgrade to Wi-Fi 7, which will be more conducive to Apple’s integration of hardware products running on the same local network and provide a better ecosystem experience,” explains the analyst.
Wi-Fi 7 represents the next-generation standard for Wi-Fi technology, promising significant improvements in transfer speeds and data throughput. The Wi-Fi Alliance has specifically highlighted the benefits Wi-Fi 7 will bring to virtual and augmented reality technologies.
