Apple’s App Store has once again demonstrated its prowess in combating fraud, with the tech giant announcing impressive figures in its recent press release. According to Apple, the App Store prevented a staggering $2 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions in 2022, reinforcing its commitment to user safety and security. With 428,000 developer accounts terminated due to fraudulent activities, Apple’s robust measures are undoubtedly paying off.
Among the key statistics shared in the press release, Apple highlighted the prevention of 105 million fraudulent developer account creations, the deactivation of 282 million fraudulent customer accounts, and the blocking of 198 million attempted fraudulent new accounts even before they could be established. Additionally, Apple successfully shielded users from almost 57,000 untrustworthy apps from illegitimate storefronts and rejected close to 400,000 app submissions that violated privacy regulations.
Apple’s commitment to maintaining a reputable and trustworthy App Store is evident in the rejection of over 153,000 app submissions for reasons such as spam, copycat content, or misleading practices. Furthermore, the company rejected nearly 29,000 app submissions for containing hidden or undocumented features, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability for developers.
Overall, Apple rejected a staggering 1.7 million app submissions in 2022, addressing concerns related to fraud and privacy. The company’s relentless efforts in protecting its users are further reflected in the blockage of almost 3.9 million stolen credit cards from being used and the banning of 714,000 accounts involved in fraudulent transactions from transacting again.

The company also lauds its “Report a Problem” tool, enabling immediate action to investigate and remove fraudulent and malicious apps, thus safeguarding the App Store’s integrity.

Despite Apple’s extensive efforts, the App Store occasionally falls victim to a scam and copycat apps that manage to slip through the cracks. These deceitful apps sometimes manage to climb to the top of the App Store charts and generate substantial revenue before being identified and removed.

Notably, Apple is reportedly planning to comply with the Digital Markets Act in the European Union by opening the iPhone to third-party app stores and side-loading with the introduction of iOS 17 in the upcoming fall.
