Apple has announced that the highly anticipated satellite connectivity features on the iPhone 14 lineup, including the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, are now accessible to customers in Australia and New Zealand. This move further expands the reach of the innovative technology, enabling users in these regions to stay connected even when they are outside the coverage of traditional cellular networks or Wi-Fi signals.
One of the key functionalities of this satellite feature is the Emergency SOS capability, which allows users to send short text messages to emergency services in critical situations. This could prove to be a lifesaver in remote areas or during emergencies where traditional communication channels are unreliable or unavailable. Additionally, users can also share their precise location with friends and family through the Find My app, providing peace of mind and facilitating easier coordination.
The availability of satellite features now spans a total of 14 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Australia, and New Zealand. Apple continues to expand the reach of this technology, ensuring that users around the world can benefit from its functionality and reliability.
Once an iPhone 14 device loses its cellular and Wi-Fi connection, the satellite features become automatically accessible. In situations where users need to place an emergency call, the phone presents an option to connect via satellite, ensuring that vital communication can be established even in the most challenging conditions.
To make use of the satellite capabilities, the iOS interface provides step-by-step guidance to users. They are directed to point their iPhones in a specific direction towards an overhead satellite, typically requiring an unobstructed view of the sky to establish a connection.
For those curious about experiencing this unique functionality, a dry-run demo can be accessed through the iPhone settings. Simply navigate to Settings then tap on Emergency SOS, scroll to the Emergency SOS via Satellite section, and select ‘Try Demo’ to explore the interface.
Considering the limitations of data transfer over satellite networks, the iPhone interface assists users with text prompts to send short, optimized messages. This ensures efficient transmission, even with slow data speeds. In case text-based communication is supported by nearby emergency services, the Emergency SOS via satellite function directly connects users to that channel.
However, if text-based communication is not available, Apple’s dedicated relay centers receive the emergency messages and relay them to the appropriate emergency services via phone, acting as a bridge between users and emergency responders.

While the company has not disclosed the pricing details for this feature after the initial two-year period, it is evident that Apple is committed to providing value and ensuring accessibility for its customers.
Apple’s expansion of satellite connectivity to Australia and New Zealand signifies a significant step forward in enabling global connectivity for iPhone users. The inclusion of this groundbreaking technology in the iPhone 14 series showcases Apple’s dedication to innovation and highlights its commitment to keeping users connected, safe, and informed, even in the most challenging circumstances. As Apple continues to refine and expand these satellite features, it remains at the forefront of technological advancements, empowering users worldwide with unparalleled connectivity options.
