On December 1, 1983, Apple introduced the Apple Modem 300, a compact and user-friendly communications package that allowed users to easily connect to other computers via a telephone line. Priced at $295, the Modem 300 was the latest addition to Apple’s Modem series.
The Modem 300 was designed to be as user-friendly as possible, with minimal controls and a compact design that could be positioned under the telephone to save desk space. Its intelligent design, featuring a built-in microprocessor, allowed the modem to handle all communications between the computer and the called computer with minimal effort from the user.
Using the modem was a simple task – users could simply type the telephone number on their Apple computer keyboard and the modem would handle the rest, automatically answering and receiving messages with the appropriate communications software.
The Modem 300 was identical to the Modem 1200, with the only difference being transmission speed. The Modem 300 had a speed of 300 baud, while the Modem 1200 had a speed of 1200 baud.
Today, the Apple Modem 300 is 39 years old, and while it may not be in use as widely as it once was, it remains a notable piece of technology in Apple’s history of innovative and user-friendly products.
