AirPods have been a popular choice for wireless earbuds since their initial release in 2016, but they have remained largely dependent on an iPhone or other nearby device. However, a recent patent granted to Apple by the US Patent & Trademark Office suggests that this could be changing in the near future. The patent details a redesigned AirPods charging case that includes an interactive display.
The front of the AirPods case would feature a touchscreen display similar to that of an Apple Watch. This display would offer users access to media controls and basic apps like Maps, Weather, and notifications. The patent suggests that users would be able to switch between apps using Siri commands. Additionally, one image shows the possibility of transferring a song from AirPods to a HomePod using Handoff.
Apple filed the patent in September 2022, indicating that the company may be exploring this idea internally. However, it’s important to note that Apple files a lot of patents, and only a few of them actually make it into real devices.
If the redesigned AirPods case does become a reality, it could offer a new level of functionality to the wireless earbuds. Apple discontinued the iPod last year after more than 20 years, but adding basic functionality to the AirPods could be a way to revive the iPod in the modern era. The case could also function as a companion accessory for the iPhone, offering users access to basic media controls and mini apps without having to take their iPhone out of their pocket.

While there are currently no rumors about Apple planning a redesign for the AirPods case, the patent suggests that the company is at least considering the idea. If the redesigned case does eventually make it to market, it could make the AirPods an even more versatile and functional accessory for Apple users. However, it will likely take some time before we see any concrete developments in this area.
