Apple has just unveiled its latest adoption statistics for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, providing an insight into the operating system landscape just days before the highly anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). As users eagerly await Apple’s announcement of iOS 17, the data sheds light on the current state of iOS 16 adoption among Apple device owners.
According to Apple, a remarkable 81% of all active iPhones now run iOS 16, a significant jump from the 72% reported in February. This surge in adoption reflects the growing enthusiasm among iPhone users to experience the latest features and improvements offered by the update.
Nevertheless, a notable 13% of active iPhones are still operating on iOS 15, while 6% persist with even older iOS versions, as revealed by the data. It is worth noting that iOS 16 was released to the public in September and is compatible with iPhone models from the iPhone 8 onwards.
Turning our attention to the iPad ecosystem, Apple’s statistics indicate that 71% of all active iPads have embraced the latest iPadOS 16. This represents a substantial increase from the 50% adoption rate recorded in February, highlighting the ongoing efforts by iPad users to stay up to date with the latest software advancements. iPadOS 16, which debuted alongside iOS 16, has evidently struck a chord with users seeking an optimized and cohesive experience across their Apple devices.
Comparing the current adoption figures to last year’s iOS 15 statistics, we find that the usage patterns remain remarkably similar. Around the same time in 2022, Apple disclosed that 82% of active iPhones were running iOS 15, closely mirroring the current adoption rate for iOS 16. This consistent trend demonstrates the steady pace at which Apple users embrace the latest software updates, eagerly incorporating them into their daily digital lives.
However, Apple’s forthcoming introduction of the iOS 17 beta to its Developer Program members is expected to mark a turning point in the trajectory of iOS 16 adoption. As the company opens up testing opportunities for iOS 17, it is anticipated that users will begin to shift their focus towards exploring the new features and enhancements that lie ahead. Consequently, the adoption rate for iOS 16 is likely to taper off in the coming weeks.
