Apple is reportedly set to announce its long-awaited augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) headset during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023 keynote on June 5, according to Mark Gurman. The company is also expected to unveil the headset’s xrOS operating system.
Gurman explained in his weekly “Power On” newsletter that the showcase at WWDC will not only include the headset itself but also the onboard xrOS operating system, accompanying services, and a software development kit and platform that will allow developers to write new types of apps.
While rumors surrounding the AR/VR headset have been circulating for years, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently revealed that mass production of the headset had been pushed back an additional one to two months to the mid-to-late third quarter of 2023. Kuo’s announcement cast doubt on whether the device would be announced at WWDC this year, but Gurman remains confident that it will be unveiled then.
Apple CEO Tim Cook alluded to the headset in a recent interview, stating that AR has the potential to “greatly enhance people’s communication” and “connection”. Cook’s comments suggest that Apple’s AR/VR headset will focus on improving communication between individuals.
Apple announced that WWDC 2023 will take place from June 5 through June 9, with sessions, labs, and other content to be made available online for free. There will also be an in-person component in the form of a “special day” at Apple Park, where randomly selected developers and students can watch the keynote and State of the Union videos together, meet teams at Apple, take part in evening activities, and more.
