Apple TV+ has decided to close the curtain on the beloved musical comedy series “Schmigadoon!” after a successful two-season run. Despite earning accolades such as a Creative Arts Emmy and recognition as one of AFI’s Television Programs of the Year in 2021, the show will not be returning for a third season.
“Schmigadoon!” originally debuted on Apple TV+, captivating audiences with its unique blend of musical charm and comedic storytelling. The first season paid homage to the classic musical theater staple “Brigadoon,” while the second season transported viewers to the vibrant setting of “Chicago.”
Despite the show’s popularity and critical acclaim, Apple TV+ made the decision to conclude “Schmigadoon!” after two seasons. Cinco Paul, in his Instagram post, revealed that the third season was fully written, boasting 25 new songs, but unfortunately, it won’t be brought to life. He extended his gratitude to the cast, crew, writers, and producers, expressing his belief that this might not be the definitive end for “Schmigadoon!”
The series follows a couple on a backpacking trip aiming to rejuvenate their relationship. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they stumble upon a magical town where everyone lives in a studio musical from the 1940s. The protagonists, played by Strong and Key, soon discover that they are unable to leave the town until they find “true love.”
Apple TV+ has recently made decisions to cancel other shows, including the comedy murder-mystery “The Afterparty” and the talk series “The Problem with Jon Stewart” in October. In December, the streaming platform also chose not to renew the musical comedy “Central Park” and the sports drama “Swagger.”
