Apple TV+ continues its global expansion with the unveiling of its first-ever German-language show, “Where’s Wanda?”. This eight-episode dark comedy not only marks a milestone for the streaming giant but also aids in meeting European television production quotas. In this suspenseful tale, a desperate couple embarks on an extraordinary journey to find their missing daughter, unearthing secrets that shatter their perception of their seemingly normal neighborhood.
The show revolves around Carlotta (Heike Makatsch) and Dedo (Axel Stein), who are confronted with a nightmarish scenario: the sudden disappearance of their 17-year-old daughter, Wanda (Lea Drinda). With no leads from the authorities, they take matters into their own hands, setting in motion a series of events that will forever alter their lives.
Apple poses a question that strikes at the heart of the story: “How far would you go to save your child?” For Carlotta and Dedo, the answer is resolute. Once an ordinary family, they now don disguises, assuming the roles of employees from an electrical company. Guided by their tech-savvy son Ole (Leo Simon), they deploy surveillance devices, first within their neighborhood, and then extending their probe to half the suburb.
Behind closed doors, a startling revelation awaits them – their neighbors are not who they seem to be. As they uncover hidden truths, the lines blur between trust and deceit, leading to an edge-of-the-seat narrative that keeps viewers hooked.
“Where’s Wanda?” is penned by Oliver Lansley, a Royal Television Society nominee, and draws inspiration from the original story by Zoltan Spirandelli. Steering the ship are accomplished directors Christian Ditter and Tobi Baumann, promising a visual and narrative experience that’s nothing short of gripping.
