Apple is gearing up to unveil its highly anticipated mixed reality headset, and while many details have been circulating about the device, some key aspects still remain shrouded in mystery. One of the lingering questions has been the headset’s name and the operating system it will run. However, recent trademark registrations suggest that Apple’s new platform could be called “xrOS.”
The New Zealand Intellectual Property Office confirmed the registration of the wordmark “xrOS” earlier this month, as highlighted by Parker Ortolani. Interestingly, the application was submitted by a shell company affiliated with Apple, a practice the tech giant often employs to protect its unreleased products from leaks by avoiding direct ties to the company.
What sets this wordmark apart is its marketing stylization, as it utilizes the iconic San Francisco typeface created by Apple. This consistent branding aligns with the logos of Apple’s existing operating systems, including iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. It appears that Apple is keen on maintaining a cohesive visual identity across its diverse product lineup.
In 2022, Apple followed a similar pattern when it registered the “realityOS” trademark and wordmark. Internally, the company had been contemplating both “realityOS” and “xrOS” as potential names for its mixed reality platform, which will power the upcoming headset as well as other augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) products.
However, Bloomberg reported that Apple has settled on “xrOS” as the official platform name for its highly anticipated headset. This choice is a nod to “extended reality,” aligning with the integration of AR and VR experiences that Apple aims to achieve.
Notably, Apple has also secured trademarks for other related terms, such as “Reality One,” “Reality Pro,” and “Reality Processor,” indicating the company’s ambitious plans within the realm of mixed reality.
According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, Apple is planning to unveil the Apple Reality Pro on the first day of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023, which falls on June 5. The headset is expected to offer users an immersive experience facilitated by multiple sensors and high-definition displays. Furthermore, it will feature high-resolution cameras enabling users to interact with the real world through augmented reality overlays.
Despite the excitement surrounding the upcoming device, its complexity is likely to limit its initial availability, with expectations that it won’t hit stores until the holiday season. Moreover, the Apple Reality Pro is rumored to carry a hefty price tag of $3,000 for its first version, positioning it as a premium offering for early adopters.
