Apple’s Tap to Pay feature on the iPhone is now available to over 700,000 additional businesses across the United States. The expansion comes as businesses with an online store built on the Wix.com platform can now accept in-person payments with Tap to Pay on iPhone, without requiring any additional point-of-sale hardware from companies like Square or Clover for transactions.
Launched in 2022, Tap to Pay on iPhone allows for iPhone-to-iPhone contactless payments using NFC technology, enabling customers to make secure payments with their iPhone, Apple Watch, credit card, or other contactless payment options. At checkout, the customer simply taps their device on the business owner’s iPhone to complete the transaction.
To use the Tap to Pay feature, businesses must first set up the feature and then accept payments with the Wix Owner app on the iPhone XS or newer. Wix.com reports that as of 2021, over 700,000 online stores have been built on its platform.
The expansion of Tap to Pay on iPhone is a significant move for Apple, as it continues to expand its footprint in the digital payments space. By partnering with Wix.com, a popular e-commerce platform, Apple is making it easier for businesses of all sizes to accept contactless payments, without the need for additional hardware.
