In a quest to push the boundaries of smartphone design, Apple is enlisting the expertise of its key suppliers to develop cutting-edge “bezelless” OLED display panels for upcoming iPhone models, according to a recent report by The Elec.
The tech giant has reportedly reached out to industry giants Samsung and LG Display, seeking to incorporate these state-of-the-art OLED displays while retaining the beloved design aesthetics of its iPhones. Unlike some competitors’ devices with curved displays and ultra-slim bezels, Apple appears committed to maintaining a flat display, expressing concerns over the optical distortion and durability that come with curved screens.
The motive behind Apple’s drive towards bezel-free displays is to unlock the potential for improved thin film encapsulation (TFE) and under-panel camera (UPC) technology. By eliminating the bezels, Apple gains extra space within the device, allowing for more advanced components like antennas, while minimizing interference.
Industry insiders suggest that Apple may debut these bezelless OLED displays as soon as the highly anticipated iPhone 17 Pro, expected to hit the market in 2025. Rumors surrounding this device also indicate it will be the first to sport under-display Face ID technology, accompanied by a discreet hole-shaped cutout for the front-facing camera.

Moreover, Apple aims to launch this device before introducing its proprietary microLED display technology to the iPhone lineup. Speculation points to the 2025 Apple Watch Ultra as the first device to showcase the custom microLED display, with subsequent models of the iPhone likely to follow in the coming years.
The Cupertino-based company is reportedly on a mission to gradually reduce the iPhone’s bezel size, ultimately striving for a fully bezel-free experience, thanks to advancements brought about by Samsung and LG’s next-generation OLED panels. In the near future, consumers can anticipate this trend with the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models, expected to boast the slimmest bezels ever seen on a smartphone, measuring just 1.55mm.
