Brie Larson, the Oscar-winning actress known for her role as Captain Marvel, is set to captivate audiences once again in the upcoming Apple TV+ series, “Lessons in Chemistry.” This highly anticipated drama, based on the novel by Bonnie Garmus and commissioned back in 2021, is slated to begin streaming on Friday, October 13, 2023.
Taking place in the early 1950s, “Lessons in Chemistry” revolves around the character of Elizabeth Zott, brilliantly portrayed by Brie Larson. Apple describes Elizabeth as a determined woman whose ambitions of becoming a scientist are stifled by the constraints of a patriarchal society.
Apple elaborates, “When Elizabeth finds herself ousted from her laboratory, she embarks on a unique journey. She seizes the opportunity to host a television cooking show, using her platform to educate the nation’s overlooked housewives—and the suddenly attentive men—about more than just recipes.”
At first glance, the premise may draw comparisons to the popular TV series “Julia,” a captivating depiction of renowned chef Julia Child’s career, brought to life by Sarah Lancashire on the Max network (formerly HBO Max). However, “Lessons in Chemistry” offers a distinctive twist. Unlike Julia Child, who was already an established culinary expert, Elizabeth Zott transitions from the world of science to the realm of cooking, transitioning from one male-dominated field to another.
Lee Eisenberg, known for his work on acclaimed shows like “The Office” and “Little America,” serves as the showrunner for this captivating Apple TV+ production. Alongside Eisenberg, Brie Larson and Susannah Grant take on the role of executive producers, ensuring the series maintains its creative vision and delivers a compelling narrative.
