Apple’s plans for a new 27-inch external display with mini-LED screen technology have been a topic of speculation lately. Display analyst Ross Young recently suggested that the project had been canceled, but Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo disagrees, saying that the product is still on the way, albeit later than expected.
Kuo predicts that mass production of the display will begin in late 2024 or early 2025 and that it will include all the features one would expect from a high-end monitor, including 120Hz ProMotion support. The display will also use a new glass material backplane, which will enable a thinner panel and an overall slimmer chassis.
The Studio Display, which launched in 2022 alongside the Mac Studio, will not be updated for about three years if Kuo’s estimate is accurate. However, this is not an unusually long time for Apple’s external display roadmap. The Pro Display XDR, launched in 2019, is more due for a refresh, and there have been rumors of a new Pro Display XDR with 7K resolution in development.

Apple has been known for its high-quality displays, and it seems that the company is taking its time to perfect the next generation of external displays. With Kuo’s prediction of a late 2024 or early 2025 release, it’s clear that Apple is committed to delivering a premium product with cutting-edge technology. While some may be disappointed by the delay, it’s safe to say that the wait will be worth it for those who prioritize high-quality displays.
