In a bid to further solidify its position in the ever-evolving media landscape, Disney has set its sights on finding “strategic partners” for its sports broadcasting giant, ESPN. While Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, has recently stated that the company has no immediate plans to spin off ESPN, it appears that they are actively seeking alliances to enhance distribution and content capabilities. According to a report from the reputable New York Post, tech titan Apple is among the companies purportedly on Disney’s radar.
The report, however, remains rather elusive when it comes to detailing Apple’s specific interests in partnering with Disney for ESPN. There is no clear indication of whether discussions between the two corporate giants have already taken place, or if Apple is merely one of several companies Disney is interested in engaging with.
What is evident, though, is that Disney is looking to the tech world for a potential match. The strategic partnership they envision for ESPN could harness the power of improved distribution—an age-old key to media dominance, harking back to the early days of the printing press. Being pre-loaded onto Apple’s iconic iPhones or other devices represents an alluring prospect for ESPN, as it could pave the way for leading the charge in the next frontier of content distribution.
Among the tech giants and mobile titans, Apple is known to be meticulous and demanding in its negotiations. Nevertheless, if there’s anyone capable of sealing a deal with the tech behemoth, it may very well be Bob Iger, who once served on Apple’s board of directors.
