Former Apple vice president of engineering for Apple Services, Mike Abbott, has taken on a new role at General Motors (GM) as the head of its newly created software department. As a senior leadership team member, Abbott will be responsible for leading the development of vehicle and enterprise software technologies and solutions.
This move comes as GM aims to deliver digital services and features to retail and commercial customers from start to finish. With Abbott’s extensive background in software engineering, GM is looking to bolster its capabilities in this area to keep up with the rapidly evolving landscape of connected cars and the demands of modern consumers.
Abbott joined Apple in 2018, where he oversaw the development of Apple Cloud Services like iCloud+, Mail, FindMy, FaceTime, and more. Prior to his time at Apple, he held the position of Vice President of Engineering at Twitter, where he focused on building out the company’s infrastructure. Abbott also worked at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins as a partner on its digital team.
Abbott’s departure from Apple is not the only recent exit from the company. In April, Apple executive Doug Beck also left the company to take on a full-time position at the Department of Defense.
