Google and Microsoft have taken inspiration from the growing popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot and have integrated conversational AI into their search products. In the AI arena, both companies made big announcements this week, offering users new and advanced ways of searching the web.
Yesterday, Google introduced Bard, a chatbot AI project that has been in the works for a while. Powered by Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), Bard is an experimental conversational AI service that will be available to the public in the coming weeks.
According to Google, Bard is designed to provide high-quality responses that combine the knowledge of the world with the intelligence and creativity of their large language models, similar to what ChatGPT does. The initial release of Bard will be in a testing capacity and will come with a lightweight version of the LaMDA AI that scales well without requiring much computing power.
In response, Microsoft held an event today announcing plans to add conversational AI tools to both the Bing search engine and the Edge browser. Bing allows for complex searches that can assist users in tasks such as planning a trip or researching a product. Microsoft says that users can refine their searches by asking for more details, clarity, and ideas. The upgraded AI technology from OpenAI, which powers ChatGPT, will be built into Bing and Edge.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says, “AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search.” The updated Bing search engine with ChatGPT integration is available today in a limited preview capacity, with users able to try sample queries on the Bing website and sign up for the waitlist. Microsoft plans to scale the preview to millions of people in the coming weeks, and a mobile experience will be in preview soon.

The new Microsoft Edge browser is also available with added AI capabilities. Edge can summarize reports, create comparisons, and compose content when provided with a prompt. It can take into account tone, format, and length, and Microsoft says that the OpenAI model used in Edge is more powerful, faster, more accurate, and more capable than ChatGPT.
With Google and Microsoft both offering conversational AI products, it’s possible that Apple may introduce similar capabilities to Safari or Siri search engine in the future. For now, AI chatbot functionality will soon be accessible through Bing and Google Search engines that can be used through the Safari browser.
