Google has announced that it will be rolling out Matter support for the Nest Thermostat model that was released in 2020. This is significant as it means that the smart thermostat can now be controlled with Apple’s Home app and Siri on the iPhone and other devices. In a blog post, Google stated that Matter support will be rolled out to the Nest Thermostat with an automatic over-the-air software update starting today. The rollout will be completed over the next few weeks.
Matter is a universal smart home standard that supports Apple’s HomeKit, Google’s Home, Amazon’s Alexa, Samsung’s SmartThings, and other smart home platforms all in one. This means that the Nest finally supports HomeKit. This is excellent news for Nest Thermostat users who use Apple devices, as it means they can now control their smart thermostats using Siri on their iPhones and other devices.
In the Home app, users will be able to adjust the Nest Thermostat’s temperature, change the thermostat’s mode, and more. It’s worth noting that iPhone users will need to be updated to iOS 16.4 or later to take advantage of this functionality.

Google is “exploring” adding Matter support to older Nest thermostats, but they remain incompatible with HomeKit for now. This means that if you have an older Nest thermostat, you won’t be able to control it using Siri or the Home app on your iPhone. However, it’s great to see that Google is working on adding support for older models in the future.
