Apple enthusiasts, brace yourselves for some exciting news! According to the latest update from renowned Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, both of next year’s iPhone 16 Pro models will boast a game-changing periscope lens. This development marks a departure from the current iPhone 15 series, where only the iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature this revolutionary telephoto camera technology.
Kuo, in a new memo posted on his Medium blog, suggested that the iPhone 16 Pro would be slightly larger than its predecessors. This increase in size would provide a “larger internal space,” enabling Apple to incorporate the coveted periscope lens into both premium devices for the first time.
Adding fuel to the fire, the ever-accurate display industry analyst Ross Young recently claimed that Apple is set to introduce new screen sizes for both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models. The smaller iPhone 16 Pro is expected to sport a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will push boundaries with a larger 6.9-inch display.
To put this into perspective, the current iPhone 14 Pro boasts a 6.1-inch display, while its bigger sibling, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, flaunts a 6.7-inch screen. With the iPhone 15 models likely maintaining the same dimensions as their predecessors, the leap from the 2023 series to the 2024 Pro models would entail an approximate 0.2-inch increase for both devices.
Interestingly, Kuo had already predicted the inclusion of the periscope camera in both iPhone 16 Pro models, owing to Apple’s strategy of reserving cutting-edge hardware features for its most premium offerings and gradually expanding the technology to other models the following year. This move aligns with Apple’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and delivering unparalleled user experiences.
As for the specifics, Kuo believes that Apple’s trusted partner, Cowell, will supply the periscope camera system for both iPhone 16 Pro models. This system employs an angled mirror to reflect light entering the telephoto lens towards the camera’s image sensor. By altering the direction of light, a “folded” telephoto setup is achieved inside the phones. This breakthrough technology allows users to zoom in further without compromising image quality or encountering any blurriness.

In terms of zoom capabilities, the periscope camera system is expected to provide a remarkable 5-6x optical zoom for the iPhone 15 Pro. In comparison, the current iPhone 14 Pro supports up to 3x optical zoom. Kuo has not explicitly mentioned whether the zoom range will be enhanced for the 2024 Pro and Pro Max models or if it will remain on par with the exclusive feature set to debut in this year’s iPhone 15 Pro Max.
With Apple continuously pushing the boundaries of smartphone technology, the inclusion of a periscope lens in both iPhone 16 Pro models marks a significant step forward. Apple fans can now eagerly anticipate an immersive photography experience with enhanced zoom capabilities and unparalleled image quality. Stay tuned for more updates as we inch closer to the highly anticipated launch of the next-generation iPhone lineup.
