Apple’s upcoming iOS 17 update may be more significant than previously thought, as the company has reportedly changed its strategy during the development process to add several new features, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Initially, Gurman had reported in January that iOS 17 could be a less significant update than previous iPhone updates due to Apple’s focus on its highly anticipated mixed-reality headset. However, in his latest “Power On” newsletter, Gurman revealed that a change in strategy has resulted in the addition of several “nice to have” features, addressing users’ most requested features.
Initially, Apple had planned to make iOS 17 a tune-up release, with the focus being on fixing bugs and improving performance, much like the Snow Leopard update for Mac OS X back in 2009. The company hoped to avoid the issues faced during the release of iOS 16, which suffered from missed deadlines and a buggy start.
However, as the development process progressed, Apple decided to change its strategy, and now, the iOS 17 release is expected to offer several “nice to have” features, even if it lacks a tentpole improvement like last year’s revamped lock screen. The update’s codename is “Dawn”, and it aims to check off several of users’ most requested features.
As with previous iPhone software updates, iOS 17 is expected to be previewed at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June before its launch in the fall. The update could offer a range of enhancements and new features, such as a next-generation CarPlay experience, changes to Siri, support for sideloading and alternate app stores, support for Apple’s mixed-reality headset, and more.

Apple’s decision to change its strategy during the iOS 17 development process could be a sign that the company is focusing on improving its software offerings to retain and attract new users. As the smartphone market becomes increasingly competitive, it is crucial for Apple to continue to innovate and improve its products to stay ahead of the curve.
