iPhone Price Evolution by Every Size and Generation

Since the first release of the iPhone until now many years have passed. Over the years Apple has released 15 main generations of the iPhone and additional versions alongside bigger or smaller screens, with additional features or just affordable options.

In this article, I have collected every single model of the iPhone and its price so you can find and compare the price changes, the evolution of storage options, and the history of iPhone versions.

I have split iPhone models and their prices by versions. The first one is the main releases of the iPhone, then I discuss Plus versions, then Special Edition iPhones, then Colored versions of the iPhones, next will be iPhone mini versions, after that, you will find Pro versions, and last not least iPhones Max and Pro Max.

Through this division, I would like to show clearly how prices were changing over the years and give you ultimate resources. At the end of this article, I have added a full list of every iPhone and its prices and storage sizes.

iPhone Price History by Generations and Storage Capacity

The first iPhone released in 2007 was available in three versions differing from each other by size and price of course. Storage options of the original iPhone were 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB, and the price started from $499 for 4 GB of storage, then $599 for the iPhone with 8 GB, and $599 for 16 GB of storage. Yes, that’s correct 8 GB and 16 GB were available for the same price only because in 2008 Apple has double the amount of memory for the same price; 4 GB to 8 GB, and 8 GB to 16 GB.

The second generation of the iPhone was called iPhone 3G and was introduced in 2008. This iPhone was available only in two storage options; 8 GB and 16 GB, and the price was set respectively for just $199 and $299.

The third iPhone generation was called iPhone 3GS and came out in 2009. Unlikely the predecessor 3GS was available in three storage options and for the first time, the maximum capacity has been increased to 32 GB. The 8 GB model of the iPhone 3GS cost originally $499, while the 16 GB model was $599, and 32 GB of storage was available for $699.

All-New iPhone 4 has been introduced in 2010. The fourth generation of the iPhone was available with the same storage options as iPhone 3GS, but only the base model was more expensive than its predecessor by $50. The rest of the storage options’ prices were unchanged. So, iPhone 4 price started at $549 and it was for the basic 8 GB version. The 16 GB version was available for an extra $50 so in total customers had to pay $599, while the 32 GB option was available for $699.

When it comes to iPhone 4S which came out in 2011 the original price started at $449 which is $100 less than the entry model of the iPhone 4 with 8 GB of storage. iPhone 4S with 16 GB of storage was available for $649 which is $50 more than the previous generation. A 32 GB version of the iPhone 4S was priced at $749 which is $50 more than its predecessor. Worth mentioning is that iPhone 4S was the first generation of the iPhone with 64 GB of storage. iPhone 4S with 64 GB storage cost $849.

iPhone 5iPhone 5S, and iPhone 6 were available in three storage options; 16, 32, and 64 GB, and its price were unchanged for these three generations. So, these iPhones with 16 GB of storage were available for $649, versions with 32 GB storage were priced at $749, and 64 GB iPhones cost $849.

iPhone 6S has been released in 2015. This iPhone was the first in the history of iPhone that is available to configure with up to 128 GB of storage. Initially iPhone 6S was available in three configurations; 16 GB for $649, 64 GB for $749, and 128 GB for $849. A year later when the iPhone 7 has been introduced, Apple decided to keep iPhone 6S on the market in two configurations; non-existing before 32 GB for $549, and 128 GB for $649.

iPhone 7 same as iPhone 6S has an unchanged price but the new model has different storage options. iPhone 7 was the first iPhone in its history that could be configured with up to 256 GB of storage. The entry model of the iPhone 7 was available with 32 GB storage for $649, the next storage option was 128 GB for $749, and the maximum storage capacity version was 256 GB was available for $849.

When it comes to iPhone 8, the entry-level storage option was increased in comparison to the iPhone 7 – from 32 GB to 64 GB and the price has changed by $50. So, iPhone 8 was available in two storage options; 64 GB for $699, and 256 GB for $849. Later on, Apple discontinued both storage options, but the version with 128 GB has been introduced and the price was set at $499.

So, the iPhone XS with 512 GB of storage was available for $1,349.

iPhone 11 came out a year after iPhone XS and was a direct successor for the iPhone XR instead of the flagship iPhone XS series. Because of that, the price of the iPhone 11 is lower than high-end models. So, the iPhone 11 was cheaper than not only the iPhone XS but the iPhone XR as well. iPhone 11 was available in three storage options; 64 GB for $699, 128 GB for $749, and 256 GB version for $849. The direct successor to the iPhone XS was iPhone 11 Pro and about its price, I am writing later in this article if you want to jump to the iPhone Pro topic click here.
