Netflix’s ad-supported plan has finally made its way onto Apple TV, months after its initial launch. The streaming giant first launched the tier in November last year, offering it on consoles, Chromecast, iOS, Amazon Fire, and various smart televisions. However, it did not initially support tvOS. Now, the “Basic with Ads” subscription plan is available on the latest version of the Netflix Apple TV app.
For just $6.99 a month, viewers can access the Basic with Ads plan, which does come with some limitations. According to Netflix, viewers can expect to see around four minutes of ads per hour, which can differ based on the TV show or movie.
Additionally, content is limited to 720p quality, which is lower than the 1080p and 4K offerings from other services on Apple TV. Basic with Ads also only allows for one stream per account, and users cannot download content for offline viewing.
Despite these limitations, the affordable plan may still be worthwhile for some viewers, especially considering that Netflix has been steadily increasing the prices of its plans over the past few years. The company has also cracked down on password sharing, attempting to force users to sign up for their own accounts and boost subscriber numbers.
The Basic with Ads plan is available in 12 countries, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. To access the plan, viewers will need to download the Netflix app from the App Store, which requires iOS and iPadOS 15 or later or tvOS 16.1 and later.
Netflix offers several different subscription plans, including the Basic at $9.99 per month, the Standard plan at $15.49 per month, and the top-tier Premium offering at $19.99 monthly. Only the lowest-tier plan includes advertising, but the two middle-tier plans still come with a few limitations.

The Basic plan supports 720p content and only allows for one device to download and watch content at a time. In the Standard plan, viewers can finally access 1080p content and double the number of devices for downloads and watching content. The Premium plan offers 4K TV shows and movies, allowing for four devices to stream at a time and six devices for downloads. Additionally, the Premium plan also includes Netflix Spatial Audio.
While the Basic with Ads plan may not be the best option for everyone, it does offer a more affordable way to access Netflix content. With the company’s ongoing efforts to crack down on password sharing, it may be worth considering signing up for an account to enjoy all of the streaming service’s content without limitations.
