Polestar, the renowned Swedish automaker, has just made an exciting announcement that is sure to delight tech-savvy car enthusiasts. The company is rolling out a comprehensive software update to all existing Polestar 2 vehicles, introducing new and enhanced Apple CarPlay features. One of the most notable additions is the inclusion of full-screen Apple Maps, seamlessly integrated into the driver display.
Interestingly, Polestar seems to be following in the footsteps of BMW, as it becomes the second automaker to offer the display of Apple Maps and navigation information projected from CarPlay in the driver’s display. BMW made waves last year by incorporating this extended CarPlay feature into its Polestar 2 rival, the BMW i4.
While some vehicles with Apple CarPlay already provide limited turn-by-turn directional information from Apple Maps on the driver’s display, the complete integration of Apple Maps into the instrument cluster remains a rarity in the automotive world. Polestar’s decision to embrace this cutting-edge technology demonstrates their commitment to providing a seamless user experience and staying at the forefront of automotive innovation.
As part of the P2.9 over-the-air update, Polestar has introduced several other noteworthy enhancements. Users can now access additional phone and media information from Apple CarPlay on the Polestar 2’s home screen tile.
Moreover, managing phone calls within the Apple CarPlay interface is now possible using the steering wheel buttons, providing a safer and more convenient hands-free experience. The update also enables calls to be projected in the driver display, further enhancing the connectivity between the vehicle and the driver’s digital ecosystem.
Beyond the Apple CarPlay improvements, the software update includes enhancements to Polestar’s Range Assistant app, which assists drivers in estimating their vehicle’s range. Furthermore, Polestar has introduced an integrated YouTube app, offering passengers an immersive and entertaining experience during their journeys. It’s worth noting that all newly produced cars will come equipped with the new CarPlay experience and the YouTube app as default features.

While the update brings a range of exciting enhancements, it’s important to highlight that Apple CarPlay in the Polestar 2 remains wired-only, lacking support for wireless CarPlay functionality. Additionally, the Polestar 2 does not currently support Apple’s EV routing and state of charge integration features, which can be found in models such as the Ford Mustang Mach E and Porsche Taycan.
