Apple’s highly anticipated augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) headset is set to enter mass production in October and hit the market by December, as revealed by investment firm Morgan Stanley. The tech giant is expected to unveil the headset at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next week, along with the release of tools for developers to create applications specifically for the device. Moreover, reports suggest that the headset will feature its own dedicated App Store.
Erik Woodring, an Apple analyst at Morgan Stanley, according to MacRumors, “While we expect Apple’s AR/VR headset to be unveiled next week, our supply chain checks suggest mass production won’t start until October ’23, with general availability most likely ahead of the December holidays.” This disclosure aligns with previous rumors circulating in the industry.
Woodring further elaborated that Apple’s supply chain is gearing up to produce a relatively limited quantity of 300,000 to 500,000 headsets in 2023. Speculations have been rife about the starting price of the device, with the analyst estimating it to be around $3,000. He also noted that the initial gross margins are expected to be “close to breakeven,” implying that Apple may not see substantial profits from the headset initially.
In addition to the AR/VR headset, Morgan Stanley’s research note also touched upon the potential announcement of a new MacBook Air at WWDC. While it remains unclear whether this information is independently sourced or corroborates existing rumors, it has added to the excitement surrounding Apple’s keynote, which is scheduled for Monday, June 5, at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
