Apple’s commitment to delivering seamless mixed-reality experiences has come to light with new details emerging about the powerful technology behind their Vision Pro headset. According to a recent supply-chain report, Apple has integrated a custom-designed low-latency memory with their R1 chip, responsible for processing camera and sensor inputs. This innovative setup is expected to provide double the performance, ensuring minimal video lag in this groundbreaking mixed-reality device.
The Key to Unparalleled Performance While Vision Pro’s computing capabilities are primarily driven by the M2 chip found in the latest Macs, it is the R1 chip that plays a crucial role in processing data from the headset’s array of sensors and cameras. Specifically, the R1 chip efficiently handles the data obtained from 12 cameras, 6 microphones, and 5 sensors. This comprehensive data processing enables Vision Pro to deliver the following essential features:
- Head-tracking: The R1 chip tracks the user’s head movements, allowing the headset to respond accordingly and provide an immersive mixed-reality experience.
- Eye-tracking: By precisely monitoring the user’s eye movements, Vision Pro can intelligently overlay virtual content onto the real world, ensuring accurate and dynamic content display.

Paving the Way for Lag-Free Performance To ensure optimal performance and minimize any noticeable lag between head and eye movements and the content displayed, Apple has employed custom-designed ultra-low latency RAM in the R1 system-on-a-chip. The Korea Herald reports that SK hynix, the world’s second-largest memory chipmaker, is the exclusive supplier of this cutting-edge memory chip.
SK hynix’s contribution includes the development of a custom 1 GB DRAM designed to support R1’s high-speed processing. Notably, this innovative DRAM boasts an eightfold increase in the number of input and output pins, effectively reducing delays. Referred to as Low Latency Wide IO, this type of chip showcases SK hynix’s dedication to providing superior performance. Furthermore, experts believe that the chip’s unique Fan-Out Wafer Level Packaging design, which allows it to be attached as a single unit to the R1 chipset, has contributed to doubling the data processing speed.
