Thieves in New York City have found a new target: AirPods Max. The premium personal audio accessories have been stolen off their owners’ heads at least 21 times since January 28th.
The thefts are being carried out by a team of four people on two mopeds. They ride up to their victims from behind, pull the headphones off their heads, and then speed away. The incidents have occurred across Manhattan, including in Central Park, and mostly in the mid-to-late afternoon, according to NY1.
Police have released photographs of the suspects and a video showing one of the thieves walking into Washington Square Park with two pairs of AirPods Max. However, no arrests have been made yet.
This type of theft isn’t new and has been seen in other cities around the world. Thieves often target victims carrying bags or seen with premium items in public. With a retail price of $549, AirPods Max certainly fits into this category.
AirPods Max owners need to be vigilant when using their headphones in public. Stow them away when it is potentially unsafe to use them, and be aware of your surroundings. If you have any information that could help catch the thieves, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
