Uber has just announced a new update to its iPhone app that includes support for Live Activities in over 1,200 cities worldwide. The feature, which has been in testing for several months, is now available to all iPhone users with the new version of the app available to download from the App Store starting today.
Live Activities is a feature exclusive to iOS 16 that enables users to stay up to date with real-time events directly from their lock screen. This feature will make it easier for Uber riders to monitor the progress of their ride without opening the app, displaying the latest estimated time of arrival (ETA), trip status, and even the vehicle’s description and license plate number.
Apple first announced Uber’s support for Live Activities at WWDC 2022, and it has since been tested in select countries before this latest global release.
Additionally, Uber Eats app users can also expect Live Activities support for food deliveries in the coming months, according to a company spokesperson.
This move by Uber reflects the growing trend of third-party apps embracing Live Activities. Other popular apps that have integrated this feature include Flighty for flight tracking, Citymapper for public transit, ParkMobile for parking, CARROT Weather for weather forecasts, and Google Maps, which is set to add support for turn-by-turn navigation soon.
Uber’s implementation of Live Activities is a significant step forward for its users who can now access vital ride information without opening the app. It also highlights the company’s commitment to improving the customer experience through the integration of new technologies.
