What kind of computer is a Mac Performa?

Macintosh Performa is a family of Apple personal computers manufactured for five years since 1992. Mac Performa computer family was designed for education and home users. Performa computers were cheaper than regular Macintosh II, Quadra, Centris, or Power Macintosh computers, and often offered even more than more expensive models at the time. 

Macintosh Performa is a desktop computer available with decent performance and a long list of innovative features. Macintosh Performa was available on the market from September 14, 1992, until June 1, 1997. Every Macintosh Performa was offered with a special version of Macintosh System Software which introduced some special features not available on the rest of Macintosh computers. Performa was shipped with Software bundles as well to unleash user creativity and help in education.

When did Macintosh Performa come out?

The Mac Performa line of personal computers was introduced by Apple in the early 1990s. The Performa brand was intended to be a more consumer-friendly version of Apple’s Macintosh computers, and it was marketed as an affordable and easy-to-use option for home users.

The first Performa models were introduced in September 1992 and the line continued to be produced and updated over the next several years. The Performa line included a variety of models with different specifications and features, ranging from entry-level computers to more powerful machines. Many of the Performa models were based on existing Macintosh designs, but they were often rebranded and sold with different software bundles and hardware configurations.

When did the first Mac Performa come out?

The first Macintosh Performa has been released on September 14, 1992, in three variants: Macintosh Performa 200, Macintosh Performa 400, and Macintosh Performa 600. All of these three Macs were on the market until October 18, 1993.

The price of the Macintosh Performa 200 started at $900 while when Performa 400 cost $280 more and the Performa 600 was valued at $2,000. It’s not a secret that Performa 200 is completely different in form factor from Performa 400 and 600. 

Macintosh Performa 200 has a built-in display like the Macintosh Classic II and all of its features but was priced at $1,000 less than Classic II. In 1993 Performa 200 was replaced by Performa 250 and 275. 

When it comes to Macintosh Performa 400 has been packed into an iconic Pizza box-like housing design known as Macintosh LC II and all of its features + a built-in modem for just $60 less than LC II. Later on, Performa 400 was available as Performa 405, 410, 430, and so on.

Macintosh Performa 600 introduced an all-new housing design later shared with Macintosh IIvi and IIvx, and featured a faster processor than Performa 200, and 400. Performa 600 was available as well in configuration with a CD drive. Later Performa 600 was available as Performa 630, 631, 635, and so on.

When did Performa Display come out?

Performa Display has been released alongside the Mac Performa 200, 400, and 600 on September 14, 1992. Apple Performa display was available in two versions: Performa Display and Performa Plus Display. Both were released at the same time and available to order together with a Macintosh or as standalone products. Displays were discontinued on July 18, 1994.

Macintosh Performa 600 and 600CD feature a 32 MHz Motorola 68030 processor with a built-in coprocessor. Performa 5200 was available on the market until February 1, 1996, for $1,900.
