In a move aimed at bolstering its premium offerings, YouTube has quietly implemented a $2 price increase for individual YouTube Premium subscriptions, elevating the monthly cost to $13.99 in the United States. Although there has been no official announcement from YouTube regarding this change, new subscribers visiting youtube.com/premium are already seeing the updated rate. Notably, the previous subscription fee of $11.99 has now been replaced with the new pricing structure.
If you happen to be subscribing via the iOS YouTube app, the cost rises even further to $18.99 per month. While individual users are experiencing the impact of this price hike, the family Premium plans remain unaffected, with the monthly fee holding steady at $22.99 since the increase towards the end of last year.
For those who prefer a long-term commitment, YouTube offers an annual subscription option introduced in January 2022. This plan will now cost $139.99, reflecting a $20 increase. Compared to the monthly subscription, opting for the annual plan can save you $27.89 over the course of a year.
The latest move in subscription pricing comes after YouTube’s rebranding of YouTube Music and the subsequent price increase in 2018. Following in the footsteps of other tech giants like Apple and Amazon, YouTube is also raising the price of its Music Premium subscription. From now on, users can expect to pay $10.99 per month instead of the previous $9.99.
However, the price increase is not the only change on YouTube’s radar. The platform is also stepping up efforts to tackle ad-blocking extensions that hinder revenue generation for Creators. As YouTube strives to maintain a sustainable ecosystem for its content creators, users should anticipate potential measures to enforce compliance with its policies.
As the new pricing comes into effect for new subscribers, there is uncertainty surrounding existing subscribers and how they will be affected by this increase. It remains unclear whether YouTube will provide a grandfathering option for current users or if they will also have to adjust to the new pricing structure.
